Success

To Have Succeeded
Ralph Waldo Emerson

To laugh often and love much
To win the respect of intelligent people
And the affection of children
To earn the approbation of honest critics
And endure the betrayal of false friends
To appreciate beauty
To find the best in others
To give of one’s self
To leave the world a little better
Whether by a healthy child
A garden patch
Or a redeemed social condition
To have played and laughed with enthusiasm
And sung with exultation
To know even one life has breathed easier
Because you have lived:
This is to have succeeded.

“If by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “Liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.” ~ John F. Kennedy, 1960

That poem was simply breathtaking. I think I’ve been slightly motivated to start on my homework and college applications.

girldujour: That’s a nice quote. Thanks for posting it.

cutelilgaara: I’m glad you liked it. It has a way of motivating while simultaneously taking the pressure off, doesn’t it?

Bonnie: I thought of you as I posted it. You’ve certainly met the poem’s criteria for success. (((hugs)))

Glad to hear it helped start your week off right!

This has always been a favorite poem of mine, and I recall giving it to my husband on a card one year for his birthday. Thank you for posting it. I think I can start my Monday now! (Hard to go back to work after a lovely week off!)

I came to a fork in the road

I took the path less traveled

which took me away from the Pond

    that is across the highway

    from the Concord Dump.
